There are men who believe "looks doesn't matter". There are men who believe lifting is futile (because you don't see real results overnight). There are men who think counting calories is futile. Dressing nice isn't needed, women don't care about money (lol), you can lose weight with this miracle cabbage diet (without dying!) and etcetera.
In reality, people hate hard work. People love things that they think would grant them happiness, but not hard work. They literally worship those fetish objects, thinking it'd bring them happiness. Women, money, status, power, beta fantasies like "finding The One™", you name it. In truth, those are neither achievable nor satisfying without hard work. Happiness is in the effort you put in to improve yourself and your life. That's all. When I do what I have to do, I'm happy, and that's it. This secret is buried in many layers of bullshit, invisible to the human eye, especially BPed folks. Those people would prefer pressing to a button and getting some pussy/money/power/status/wealth, even though that shit would be unsatisfying. "Getting your shit together, eating healthy, lifting, improving your game? God forbid!! I'll just try this new bullshit pseudoscience diet, I will continue playing video games and smoking weed because that's my passion, and I'll just go buy How To Approach Women On Nearly Anywhere: Totally Not Like A Social Retard Edition by RealSocialMerchants Crew".
Happiness is in the work. It's why you're on this planet. Fruits of your work is good also, but the real pleasure is in the work itself.

I have been back lifting for 3 months now and I am definitely realizing that it takes years to build the kind of muscle we talk about on here...
It is a long uphill slog. It is painful and not for the weak or undetermined.
And that is completely discounting all the other aspects, like getting your career/finances in order, getting your mental game right, getting over approach anxiety. etc etc etc.

I wonder how many butt-hurt weak and undetermined boys come to TRP. Once they internalize that it's all a long uphill slog, the sooner they take control of their life. They'll have to step away from instant gratification and shift to planning and execution, gains and plateaus.
[–]chewy_dragee 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The thing with lifting is also that if you go 3 times a week or less your progress slows to a crawl.
You see guys all the time going for months on end without real gains, just because they fuck around....
And those gym-bros with the beach balls and stretchy chords are fucking hilarious.
Don't give up bro!! It's 10000% worth it!!

Excellent point. What you are talking about connects with the "covert contracts" talked about in NNMNG. I don't think this behavior is necessarily an avoidance of hard work or investment, but more about the desire for predictable results, which itself comes down to fear of rejection.
One of the aspects of the Matrix that traps men is the "Input X Get Y" set of levers they are given right from the cradle. We often develop an expectation that the whole world works that way, and experience frustration when the levers don't work like we think they should.
Here is a textbook, read, take standardized exam, get good grade, advance level, repeat, graduate college. Get job in mailroom, work hard, good review every year, promotion every few years, repeat, corner office at 50. See attractive girl, bring flowers and chocolates, fall in love, marriage, sex, kids, repeat, house full of loving family.
It's much harder to believe and accept that this shit is ambiguous. Just because you can squat 1.5x your body weight does not mean a sudden transformation in social status. There is no "right" answer to a shit test, and no way to make a girl find you attractive if you don't have whatever it is that the animal part of her brain wants.
All we can do is strive to be better today than we were yesterday, celebrate our wins and laugh off our losses. As another poster mentions, the reward is the work itself. As time rolls on, we become the sum of our choices. It is much harder when you are young, but I am at the age now where I can see the result my own daily choices compared to others, and let me tell you - they add up.
Desire is the cause of all suffering. Not to say we should abandon ambition, but to spend our time in the present moment and enjoy it for what it is. Focus on what is within, and not without.

Super nerds seem to have it the hardest because they're so used to pressing a button on a video game and winning instantly.
Stepping back to realize that their impatience is part of their problem means more than a splash of cold water in their faces to accept that this isn't an overnight change that can be made.

Which is funny too, the current trend of gamification in your life could work, they haven't really made that jump.
You can track your runs with a level of granularity thats unheard of. You can see, in real time, what a 5 deg incline does to your 5k time, or what slowing down on the first half does to your speed on the second. You can input your workout numbers, and see what going hard first on squats does to your bench press over time. Press button, do the work, get the feedback.
The old school 8/16 bit games never held your hand, they taught constant failure and rewards for learning systems. At some point, they lost their way, and now just are slot machines. pull lever, get endorphins...

Clearly, you have not played Fire Emblem.
[–]stonepimpletilists 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I'm guessing that game was designed to replicate what I was talking about?
[–]brandor77 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Just yanking your chain. Your point is super valid in the Candy Crush era.
Fire Emblem games are notoriously difficult strategy games where a simple mistake often means death for your entire army. They require the player to be something of a masochist. I love it, but can only take it in small doses.

Why do video games come up so much on this sub? They seem like a scapegoat for some who think that anyone who enjoys them is less than you. I play 4 or 5 times a week, and I've also lost 25 pounds since November.
Making yourself better doesn't have to include giving up a hobby. Fuck that noise, I wanna blow off steam with Rocket League or COD.
"Super nerds" don't have it hardest. It's ingrained in the American society. People who buy into the "instant results" lifestyle have it the hardest.
[–]Chinny4daWinny1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
While I agree with you, I can see why video games are blown off in this sub. This comes down to the crowd that identifies as gamers vs what they actually do/people who represent them.
Look at TRP for example. To outsiders, we're creepy neck beard rapists. Think of your casual gamer. What type of picture does that paint for you? Fat, unmotivated individual who does nothing but game.
If you wish to game do so. If you're hitting all goals you want to in your life there's nothing wrong with gaming. Just don't let gaming be the only thing you live for/dedicate your life to it.

Fat, unmotivated individual who does nothing but game.
I guess that's what really set me off. I would probably be classified as a "super nerd" if people knew my daily routine with gaming, but I don't look the part.
You hit the nail on the head.

Depends on the game, doesn't it? Ever played EVE?
[–]fullanalpanic 2 points2 points2 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Well... sure. But what benefit is there for us to continue fleshing out this metaphor analogy?.
[–]Viklove0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link
That wasn't a metaphor, it was an observation...

I stopped playing video games in 1987.
[–]Viklove0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Damn, they've come a long way since then.
[+]abdada-7 points-6 points-5 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
No they haven't. Press button, get instant pleasure. Press button, get instant pleasure.
Boring to me. Can't see the point of videogaming if you're an adult, unless it's with your kids, or if you're a developer.

Alright I'm sorry, I'll get off your lawn.

I think the first stage of all of this is at least an intervention to stop people from doing the things they're doing that gets them into deep shit.
As they say with mental illnesses there are positive symptoms and negative symptoms. And that positive doesn't mean good. It's more active symptoms and passive symptoms.
The active symptoms of beta behavior can be stopped overnight. Those are the list of "don't do this" checkboxes. Shining light on that behavior and how it holds people back in life is good, and conscious red alerts can go off as soon as people start slipping back into those reflex actions.
The passive symptoms need to be challenged with development. Things like getting into shape and taking better care of yourself, becoming an interesting person and building confidence.
With some mental illness, drug treatment can wipe out one category similar to how advice can wipe out one category here, but you're left with the other set of things.
Basically it's a life long trek to try to put yourself on the right path and stay there.

Social aptitude...
I can't overstate that one. It's the difference between Hilary, and Obama, 2008. Which one ended up with a better life?
[–]TRP1172 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I agree. Too much information and theory without action is worthless. I think some guys try to read their way out of the rut in their life.
It's better to go out in the field and fuck up, than sit at home reading trp. I was one of those guys. I still am making the journey. But you can only make progress if you get off your ass.
[–]Rob_Dead4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I think trp attracts a lot of hopeless cases who expected everything to suddenly start to fall into place like a Disney fucking fairytale just because they see, for the first time in their lives, why they can't score with chicks.
What they don't get is how to sort it out. The " Pushing the button" analogy is absolutely correct, this age is all about the now, Now, NOW! and deliberately so, people stop thinking if they are caught up in just wanting, taking, fulfilling a desire.
A thinking population is a threat to control. The feminization of men in general is part of the way to remove that threat. The Now culture is another part of it. We should all be good little consumers like sex in the city friends and stop making such a fuss about being told what to do...

the weak, but hopefull latch onto the frames of the strong.
Like Nietzsche said. Envy as an aspirational model is a good thing. As a replacement for aspiration... isn't

WHY WAS THIS REMOVED , OP YOU ARE THE MAN
[–]Denver_Luv2 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Anything else is bullshit.
I just read an interesting Krauser post where he posits this:
I was thinking recently why some men (I’ll call them Former Chumps) find the Player’s Journey to be a life-changing struggle of high drama and near collapse spread over four volumes of a Tolkien-esque memoir….
…. whereas other men (I’ll call them Trainee Chads) would summarise their journey as “learned a few openers, put myself out there, and got laid plenty. Cool”. Naturally the fChumps tend to write detailed blogposts, build and memorise systems that are “a bit like looking at a Gothic cathedral or reading Ulysses: you are incredibly grateful that someone has put in the work and created the artifact before you, but it’s hard to fathom precisely how they went about doing it.”* In contrast the tChad is often ridiculing the fChump – “it’s just talking to girls. Dude.”
So why the divergence in opinion? I think it comes down to which side of this divide you fall on. Is your Journey a process of:
Uncovering a pre-existing SMV and personality that is attractive to women, or; Ridding yourself of a Pussy Repellent virus and then building an attractive man from scratch.
Makes sense to me, given the discussions I've seen. The guys who are "tchads" already have some or many fundamentals. The whole post is interesting because I think it explains many of the debates seen in this sub.
