With planting season coming around the corner in many places I just wanted to post a reminder for some people here , especially those new to the board. I think (obviously it's not an original thought) that one of the best skills we can learn is gardening. A few reasons for this:

  1. It cultivates a patient , slow mind . When we are online or playing games we can be hyper-stimulated, which is not a bad thing in itself but it is important to find a balance between quick thinking and slow reflection. Both are needed for a quality life.

  2. Depending on your ambitions , it can be hard ass work. You may think "gardening" sounds like a peaceful , feminine activity until 16 cubic yards of top soil and compost ends up on your driveway, or it's time to trim trees which are crowding out your plants etc. Similarly if you want to do it correctly you will spend hours on research and engage the many different parts of your mind to solve complex problems and innovate.

  3. You are literally growing money and lots of it. You would be shocked how much food can be grown in a relatively small space. Even if you live in a city you can cultivate a rather decently sized crop. That money you save from not buying low quality , over - ripe , preserved foods can go directly into having cool experiences.

  4. It is incredibly satisfying to "reap what you sow" and will lead to expertise in other areas, such as cooking, as you will have to find creative ways to make good dishes from what you grow.

  5. You will be much , much healthier and can almost completely cut processed foods out of your diet (if you have enough space).

  6. It is one important step toward self-sufficiency. I wouldn't say that I'm a "prepper" but I do not want to completely depend on society. This year I am focused on crops , next year it will be rain captures , solar panels , permaculture and all sorts of exciting projects which will save me money, help me exert more control over my life as well as engage in scientific pursuits.

This is a quick summary of some of the benefits. Aside from BJJ and my career , growing my own food is one of the most satisfying endeavors I have ever participated in. Please give it a chance even though it may seem somewhat slow and boring at first.
