I was supporting us both financially while she finished school and worked part-time as a barista. I had a high-level IT job in the entertainment industry and was making ungodly amounts of money for someone who was in their mid-20s. The downside to this is that I was working EXTREMELY hard and a lot of hours; my work weeks would be ~80 hours and I was on call pretty much 24/7. My ex-wife convinced me I was insane, got me to see a psychiatrist who put me on psychiatric drugs that made me a shell of my former self and pretty much disabled me mentally and physically.

Well, she graduated, got a pretty good jobs and started fucking some other dude thinking I was too 'medicated' to ever figure it out, which was kinda true. It wasn't until I noticed this guy who looked almost exactly like me and her posting inside jokes back and forth on her Facebook wall that I got to be a little suspicious; after all we had been together for nine years by that point - we didn't have any non-mutual friends. Did I mention this guy looked like he could be my twin brother? At that point all the weird secret shit and scheming she had been doing for the past year of our marriage made so much sense. I needed to make sure though, after all I was still madly in love with this person, so I stated up-front "I need a change and I don't think where we are living is doing either of us any favors. I am moving to (the state where we honeymooned / where I am from), are you coming with me?" When she hesitated and said "I- I don't know..." it gave me all the information I needed.

While she was at work over the next couple days I packed up everything that could fit in my car and meant anything to me and took off to start my new life. Three days and a a few states away (honestly I needed the buffer because I was an emotional wreck) I called her up and said "Hey.... So, how's [the other dude's name]?" There was a long pause before she replied "...you were never supposed to find out. I'm sorry." Up until this point she was unaware that I had managed to put two and two together. "So this is how it's going to go down. I'm exceptionally hurt and betrayed, but I need to sever as completely with you as possible so you're going to figure out how to do a dissolution of marriage, you're going to file all the paperwork, you're going to send me what I have to sign and you are going to pay all the fees. If I feel for one second you are trying to screw with me or fuck me over, I am getting my dad's lawyer [he had gone through a NASTY divorce and had a brutal legal team, and she knew it] and will come after you for adultery and spousal abandonment [since she had made the claim repeatedly that I was insane and needed to be on medication I had a valid argument that I was disabled, as far as the courts were concerned]."

The last contact I had with her was a very apologetic phone call letting me know that papers were coming and that the courts require the use of a process server since I was out of state and she just didn't want me to think I was trying anything dastardly... A little over a year later I got my finalized divorce paperwork in the mail a few days before Christmas, which was the best present ever.

The hardest part of the divorce was actually getting myself off all the fucking psych meds she had me taking. 4mg of klonopin a day along with a SNRI/SSRI/mood stabilizer cocktail. Since I was on her insurance at the time, I found myself with no coverage and ended up going off the benzodiazepines cold turkey... I got to go through benzo withdrawal AND my divorce at the same time and I will be god damned if it didn't make me a super-resiliant person. I feel like after having gone through that I can take on damn near anything.

Holy shit this was hugely long, sorry. I wasn't expecting that; I've just never really had the opportunity to tell that story before as I try not to talk about my divorce all that much since, lets be honest, outside of other divorced dudes nobody really wants to hear about that shit.
