It depends on custody, at least in the United States.

There is a presumption on the part of family court to ascribe one parent as the primary custodian, and the other parent as the one who pays the primary custodian support to take care of the child.

This means if the mother is employed making $120,000/yr., and the father is employed making $60,000/yr., the father making half as much pays the mother making twice as much, if the mother is awarded custody.

Now many here at this point would say, "Scetis, this is child support, not spousal support or alimony...what about alimony?" But there really is no substantive distinction between monies paid for child support and monies payed for alimony, because child support payments need not be spent on the child at all; the custodian can spend it every month on handbags, raspberry martinis, leopard print cougar dresses, red convertibles and foo foo dogs, while the kids are running around in rags eating bread and water.

Which is why I make no distinction between alimony and child support...I tend to think of child support as "ex-wife support" or "stealth alimony," and it is all based on whoever is not awarded primary custody, regardless of income disparity.

Child support. It's based on your income and nothing else. She could be a millionaire, and you work at Starbucks. If she has primary custody, you have to pay a percentage of your income for your kids.

It depends on the judges in the area. If she makes significantly more than he does, then she'd probably have to pay alimony.

In my case, she never worked during the marriage, so I got stuck with alimony.

Generally speaking, the law is designed for men to be auto ATM machines and women as the receiver, of course, all under the name of "What's Best for the Child". (96% vs 4% for males).

In many areas, such as Calf or Florida, the child is long gone out of the nest, but the auto ATM payments don't stop, again, all under the name of What's best for the Child.
