I came from a family that always played it safe with jobs and wanted me to take the safe and easy path. When I started getting successful in my career they kept telling me not to forget where I came from. I never forgot and never looked back either. I don't owe them shit, why would I keep associating with them when all I hear is "You've got money and we're family, I need some things..."

People keep using that saying incorrectly. When someone says don't forget where you came from its supposed to mean don't forget where you came from so you don't come back. So many people use that saying as a way to hinder someone's progress. Stay awesome and stay arrogant bro but don't get mad at them. It's human nature for others to hate on someone who's shining.

Not mad anymore. Haven't seen many of them in ages and am much happier for it.

When you start to rise people are going to try to tear you down. Tell you to slow down and relax, take life easy.
This happened to me when i decided to lose weight. People act like you've joined a cult just cos i started doing 50 push ups, 50 squats, 50 sit ups, every day.
Some people treated me as if my personality changed!
Only my buddies told me that i was doing well and that it was a positive change. Even the misses was saying "you don't need to - i like how you look regardless"... that's not the point at all!
Do it for yourself.

This is so true and hits so close to home. A few years ago I decided to invest my personal time into getting a second major stream of income. I eventually found a good deal on an existing business and of course the guy selling it was desperate to off-load it because he was getting divorced raped.
I had to jump through a lot of hoops with the banks because it was a semi-complicated deal. Through the 4 month process ALL I heard from my family and friends was "Why would you want THIS business?" and "Why would you want to live / operate out of the city?" and "What if you FAIL?". I would have moments of "Oh shit, what if they're right?" and then I would come to my senses and think "FUCK THEM, if they are right then so be it, I'll re-build and start again." My dad beat into me that "You will never get rich working for someone else" and it's absolutely true. While I could easily take my income from this business and show off I just keep reinvesting and letting people wonder WHEN I'm going to fail. WHEN I retire at 40 I'll get that satisfaction of answering the question "How could you possibly retire at 40?".
If I listened to them 3-4 years ago, I'd be miserable toiling along in my 9-5 waiting for my 65th birthday so I could retire and die a year later.
