Internalized Male Disposability, I suppose. I like acting kindly for the sake of kindness, and I've generally done so without any expectation of compensation. It's simply how I was raised, and I got used to it. At any rate, I don't see much reason to have to change myself, simply because others don't share the same sets of morality that I do.

It's my belief that in order to enact a change in society, then one must start at an individual level. I want a kinder society, and it is for that reason that I foster kindness. I want a hopeful society, and it is for that reason that I foster hope. I want a just society, a rational society, an honest society, et cetera, et cetera. When you stop - when you give up - then no hope of change can ever be achieved.

Now, if a girl somehow thinks I open doors for her because I want to get in her pants, then that's her problem.

Because I noticed that holding a door for another person, man or woman, almost always made them hurry to get to it, I started making a small joke when they (most of them) thanked me.

"I just wanted to make you run."

Well, once I held the door for a younger woman at work and made the mistake of saying, "I just wanted to see you run." But, it wasn't about ogling her, or anything. It just came out differently.

And, I got an earful from my boss when that woman told her about it. I was told that I'd harassed her and needed to apologize. I refused. Now, I could see how what I said could be interpreted as sexual, but I decided that she was responsible for the interpretation she gave it. I was just making the same small, lame joke I'd made in the past.

It went back and forth for a while, with my boss and the HR person deciding that what I'd said wasn't sexually intended, even though they were aware that it's only the person who decided to feel sexually harassed who is legally allowed to make that interpretation. I did finally write her a letter to explain why I'd said what I said, AND to tell her I was angry with her, that it was her responsibility for having interpreted it as sexual.

I was also raised to hold doors for women. Last time I did I was told

"I'm perfectly capable of getting the door for myself"

"I'm sure you are, I already had it open though. I'll be sure to close it in your face next time."

Pretty ridiculous. Even if you don't even look at them while you are holding the door they assume you are hitting on them.

Bitch, if I was hitting on you, opening a door isn't the way I'd do it. Showing subservience gets you nothing but disgust.

Being courteous, kind, helpful, and all the rest was common in the old days. If you were in scouts you got awards for it, hell it made everything more pleasant when a yes ma'am or sir was added with a warm thank you and hello.

Now that's all gone, replaced by foul mouthed snotty bitches who can barely string two words together while demanding a novel from men. The vile tarts wanted it this way, they wanted an end to polite society so they could enjoy their feral impulses without any restriction just like a mangy cur in the wild so fuck'em!

Will a woman who gets to a door before you, hold it open so you don't have to open it ? Even if you have stuff in your hands and may have a hard time opening the door ? No. Should you hold the door for them ? No.

Same here,
I give them absolutely no preferential treatment. I had a few of them look at me either with disgust or simply shock that I didn't let them into the elevator/stairs/door/train whatever first. They are so fucking entitled it was like a slap in the face to them. I just ignore them or look at them with my don't give a fuck face and carry on.

Last year I held a door open for a dude walking into Wawa. There was a girl not too far behind but I let the door shut. She said I could've waited for her. I replied I don't have time to hold doors open for everyone. She didn't like it and went in the store. I got to my car but had to double back to get another thing. Held the door open for some other dudes walking out. After getting my thing and exiting said Wawa, another dude was walking up to the door and I stood there and held the door open. He said thanks and I replied there's always time to help people out. This was done in plain view of the girl who was saw this going down and then I let the door shut on the next woman.

Not only do they assume your gesture of humaneness, chivalry, politeness, decency, friendliness, etc. is a display of sexual interest, when they discover that you're not interested in taking them home for a fucking, they're liable to become petty and vindictive. You have to treat them like terrorists or mobsters (I got this advice in another comment thread here) and I think that's appropriate. Smile and nod but keep your distance. If you get too close, or become involved, you'll be sunk.
