He wanted to get into the best polish university for business and he didn't make it. He will end up going to a decent school but it's like the 4th one in the ranking in Poland.

Even the best Uni in Poland is still LRM. Others are VLRM. It's not like he got into NYU while aiming for Harvard. In this case his friend is a failure.
Also laughed at you seeing Duke as an equivalent of Princeton. Princeton is VHRM, Duke is MRM. Completely different level of quality.

Obviously Duke and Princeton are on different levels, but Duke is still ridiculously hard to get into. I was just using examples of very good universities in the US.

That's true. Still if someone got rejected from Harvard I would expect a rejection from Princeton as well. It would just mean he wasn't "the best" while getting rejected from Duke would mean he wasn't "a contender". Honestly though faculty from Warsaw would probably kill for a tenure track at Duke.

Sometimes it's just a numbers game. A friend of mine was accepted at Harvard, rejected at Yale and Duke.
