In our societies the equivalent may be moving out of our parents house (going to college, working elsewhere...). I went to college, finished it and then had no job and no flat and managed to get my shit together somehow. I considered myself a man. Then I got a job and started with zero responsability. I did then not feel like a man anymore. But you could argue that I felt already like a man after my gf at the age of 20 had left me.

In this structure of thinking a 60 year old guy who lived all his life on welfare may be never a man, while a 16 year old who works a year abroad may be considered a man.

So I don't like this thinking. A man is a man, it is as simple as that.

I guess my transition was when I lost my best friend of 15 years because of his fiancée. I believe I wrote a story explaining it all on here. Anyway that kind of made me think if that relationship could be broken. A man I thought of as a brother, someone I could gladly give my life for... if that could be broken. what hope is there for an other bonds to be made long term. I decided then I would go my own way. Most of my female " friends" used me as a on call help desk, or emotional tampon so I cut those relationships as well.
