Why didn't they trace the IP back to the device before going to trial? Shouldn't that be done by the prosecution to ensure they have a case?

Imagine if this went to a jury trial and in the middle of proceedings it was found it came from her devices. Those DAs would look like retards and rightly so. But it never should have went to trial.

I once worked at an ISP and we would often get requests from city and state police for IP usage records for our accounts when they were investigating threats over email (this was pre social media). You had to be sure you could tie the communication back to an account and subsequently to a device so you knew who you were arresting. Just because it was from [email protected] with John Doe as the full name didn't mean shit, anyone could set up a mail client with that info.
