well, where I come from it is hard to use the term "afford" when talking about buying homes. people take loans that they pay off in 20 - 40 years. they are literally slaves to banks

I live in california, in the midst of millions of vapid, self-obsessed, consumer whores in yoga pants and nice cars - and I can tell you most of them (especially with kids) can't afford a house, so they rent out these vastly over-priced, shitty little apartments that are like filing cabinets, and live their lives in such a manner, lost in the herds of their fellow human monkies, drifting from stupid ass hipster hang outs to the next cool thing, pissing away so much time, energy and resources. I dont even know how they cope, as i have my own methods and it involves getting out of these horrible cities filled with lazy, useless women and camping/exploring the surrounding mountains, deserts and other landscapes as far away from people and especially women, but to each their own, I guess :D

I worked my ass off and bought a modest home. My house is in an okay neighborhood and cost less than my yearly salary.

What do you do for a living, and what are you doing to improve your income?

If you are interested in learning about how this situation has developed, you really have to study money and how it works.

Money is largely fiction, it is created out of thin air by the richest banking families and injected into the economy as a DEBT instrument.

You then are forced to use this money (since government mandates it for payment of taxes) and pay interest on it (also the reason you are forced to pay taxes, to pay the government's debt). The interest goes straight into the pockets of the banking families who never had anything to loan out to begin with since they created this money out of thin air.

The end result is that everyone goes into debt, and can't afford to buy houses because of all the economic problems this piled on debt creates.

Until people wake up to this scam, it will never stop. It will continue on into perpetuity.

Im 26 from the uk and extremely lucky. I got a £30K gift from my parents and i brought a house with my ex who left after a year and signed everything over to me fee free. I got stupid lucky. I am paying £450pm

People are slaves. My parents house is going to be paid off soon. My dad has a corvette and we're looking at a beach house.

Everything goes to me.
I don't ever plan to purchase a home.

I'll probably move out and rent an apartment here and there when I actually feel like moving out, but I plan to live here once its all paid off.

Better yet, I might even renovate it and rent out rooms.

I've sincerely thought about this too as a 24 year old and I'm not interested in renting either. So I basically pay 10 to 20k a year, for what exactly? I more inclined to try to find some cheap land, build my own tiny house and then live cheap and keep savings up so I can work odds and ends jobs and retire at a young age. Working till you're dead or dropping 30 years of your life on a house doesn't sound like a good time to me. There is so many more things money can do for you. The problem is land is at a premium too so it makes it difficult to even consider building. I won't let that get me down though.

You always pay rent: mortgage is rent and taxes are rent.

The people paying this have to fork over a giant payment up front to even be eligible for this "privilege".

They can't afford it most of the time. They're on credit and pretending. When the credit bubble bursts they go homeless to the meat-grinder.

Cheap rent and having preserved food needing no refrigeration and the knowledge to live off the land is how you actually live without the banks owning you.

and will likely work to their graves :(

We all go to the grave: it isn't "nicer" to be a sedentary elderly potato, disabled and/or slowly degraded over years of non-exercise. I'd rather be working & healthy right up to the day I die so I always feel I have purpose in my action until there is no more life left to live.

Whats wrong with a trailer park? Smells like a mother talking in the back of your head. A modular is cheap has a small back yard and if you dont let it become the stereotypical redneck hacienda you can have it paid off within 8 years then can seriously start saving for a house and can use the trailer as a down payment to a realtor.

I paid 2400 per month in mortgage (property tax, interest and insurance included) for 25 years. I bought the house at 350K. I sold the house for 550K (note that I live in a recession proof town).

2400 X 12 X 25 = 720K. So 720K - 550K = 170K. I gave someone else 170K, over 25 years, to live in a house until it was paid off. 170K % 25 % 12 = 567 dollars, which is what I paid to live in my house per month.

In my area - which is very high rent - I'd have spend at least 2K per month *** to live in 1/3 of the quality of life and space I lived in in my house.**** 2K X 12 X 25 = 600K. What would I have got back in return by renting? 0 dollars.

So instead of getting back 0, I got back 550K. Any questions?

I didn't even mention the mortgage interest tax write offs, which are pretty sweet. Add those to the mix over 25 years and I pretty much lived rent free. You people need to learn math.

The ancient concept of dowry existed all along for this reason. Women and children are burdens, which should be compensated for with huge sums of money up front.
