This was absolutely fascinating, for a bunch of reasons, but the one that I'll mention here was his point about how miserable couples were while on vacation, how it brought out the worst in them. I will say amen to that... My ex anticipated our vacation time for the entire year or so leading up to it, and unless everything was absolutely fucking perfect for every minute, and unicorns flew out of the sky with rainbows shooting from their asses, she would get in a bitchy mood often, ruining it the whole thing. It got to the point where I would just would not talk to her for a day or two… May as well have gone by myself than with someone being like an ornery teenager.

TRP also has a thread on this article. Some unusual reactions actually. Plenty of supposedly RP dudes trying to justify the vacations they've already taken or are currently planning with an SO. Go figure.

Anyhoo, this was my reaction to the article:

"Absolutely fascinating. I've been saying the same thing about holidays and relationships for a long time - you only have to watch a single episode of The Amazing Race to get the idea.

Personally, I don't think "travel" has any intrinsic value - it sure as hell isn't the mystical, life-changing experience that everyone makes it out to be. "Travel" is just another emperor with no clothes - everyone already knows it on some level, but no one wants to be the first to say it.

Holidays are for people who hate their life. Yeah, it's a bit hyperbolic but you get the idea.

I have friends who routinely blow thousands of dollars on "romantic overseas holidays" with their partners. And I always make a point of asking the guys if it was the exotic fuck-fest that they had hoped for. Nope - it's exactly as the voyeur in the OP described, every goddamned time.

But when you've invested that heavily - of course you're not going to publicly admit what a shitty use of your time, money, and energy it was. So you end up with everyone making these hollow statements about the amazing time they had in Amazingland. Ugh. Righto.

And what's every girl looking for online? A travel partner! Oh yes, the stupid, it burns alright."

Christ, I remember one ex-gf whining about the fact that we never went on "getaways" like the other couples on Fakebook. She was a lot younger and really didn't have her shit together, nothing but a burden looking back on it (last ho this Captain ever saved). A holiday together would have been a nightmare. The foot came down. "Sure babe, as soon as you start paying rent". There was a bit of pouting, but she knew I was right and she knew she was being unreasonable.

I got out of the relationship as soon as she got her career in order.

She didn't give up on the idea though. Girl had two relationships disintegrate just days prior to going on vacation with some other guys she was dating. Guessing those poor bastards just couldn't stomach the idea of 10 days 24/7 with her.

She lost a decent amount of her own money, and I think she might have actually started to self-reflect on why this kept happening. But she was back on the carousel before there was a chance for any real growth.
