If they been GF and BF for a decade, then she should do some math. Add the value of the gifts she's been given during that decade. Subtract the value of gift she gave. That number that remains is almost always positive.

If equality was a goal, then men shouldn't have to get Christmas presents to their significant others at all. Women will almost always have control over a big chunk of the household-budget. It would only be fair that he used the money on himself for a change.

But we all know that equality isn't the goal. And, he probably suspects that he will have to give away half his belongings to her and future earnings if he gives away a ring.
