This is a grey area. Anyone who has worked in low level retail is mostly going to side with the woman. These jobs are dogshit, and pay horribly. Every little bit extra helps. Nobody is going to know and nobody is going to notice or care. She's probably making close to minimum wage as her hourly rate, so tips make a big difference.

I've worked in lots of jobs where there's tips involved, and this is absolutely standard operating procedure atleast in bars/clubs. Depending on the bar or club, the owner can be making anywhere from 2k-50k PER NIGHT, whereas employees are making maybe 100$-300$. EVERYBODY is skimming a little off the top. EVERYBODY. Bouncers, coat check, bartenders, bar backs, everyone takes a lil piece. If you take too much, then you get caught and u get fired. But there's a middle ground that everyone just mostly stays in and nobody talks about it, it's just accepted.

I don't know exactly how it works in hair salons, but I'd guess it's similar. She's not even going to get many opportunities to pull that "scam", and she's only making one dollar extra, and she's not stealing from you. It makes no difference to you, so why even mention it? Is she stealing? Kindof..but she could easily just say she pressed the wrong button on the till and gave u senior price by accident. Why are u trying to be a snitch/hero? It's not your fight, you don't know the owner they could be the biggest scammiest scumbag of all, almost every owner I've met has been a totally horrible character with no morals or values that would backstab their own family to get an extra dime. The people at the top do not need your help or charity. The people at the bottom do.

When you said "keep the change" basically gave her the green light to do what she did. She saw nothing wrong since lying and going by the book at the same time is in her nature.

So when you questioned her, she spinned it back to you as it was your fault if you changed your mind. Very cunning of her to spin it that way. By default you had to give up or else she got the "oh, so you were lying about keeping the change" card.

If there were other people around she would've taken you to school unless you put her in her place and make yourself look even worse under public opinion. This is why interacting with these creatures aren't worth for relationships.

Years ago I used to cashier at a convenience store/gas station.

When it got busy about once or twice an hour I'd ring someone up, take their money and push the "No Sale" button and give them their change.

This alone supplemented my pay by about $400/week

I'd also keep all the "mistake" lottery tickets. None ever won though.

Occasionally we would be short a case of cigarettes and I'd sell them at the bar.
