I didn't watch the show, so I'm just going from the description in the original post.

It sounds like the point of the show is to set up situations that they think could get people's reactions, and then film them. It is interesting that the makers of the show seemingly thought that the man asking the woman to pay for half the date (after being told they'll just be friends) was something that they thought would work other people up enough for them to put on the show.

However -- even in a romantic relationship -- it would not be unreasonable for the couple to split the bill, as equal partners. But here, theoretically, it should be even less arguable if the woman has said she wants to just be friends. The traditional idea of a guy paying for a date is basically a form of romantic giving; once the woman has turned it into a friendship situation, the romantic date has become two people having lunch together: The guy could still pay if he wants to, but should he be expected to?

Also, I think that it's been discussed on this group before that some people are dating just to get free meals out of people whom they have no romantic interest in. Considering that, the guy's behavior would make even more sense; he would be protecting himself from people like that.

So, in light of the above, I'm not sure why the makers of the show thought that such a situation rose to the level of a setup that they should have on their show. Let's not forget that (if this were real), the woman could have just turned down the date to begin with, if she wasn't romantically interested in the guy. Even if one were to argue that maybe the date was to get to know each other, and she lost interest in him because of the date, why is it so unreasonable to split the bill? That's basically saying that all the risk of the date being a "failure" falls only on the guy -- why? Because he is a guy? Would they think it were fair if the woman not only had to pay half the failure date, but the entire failure date? Because that seems to be the question that they are trying to raise with respect to the guy: Should he have to pay for the entire date that turned out to be a failure?

That being said, this sounds like reality TV, and I remember reading somewhere that a lot of reality TV is basically fake. So, it wouldn't surprise me if at least some of the reactions from other people are actually actors themselves. After all, who goes to a restaurant and pays any attention to how someone at another table is splitting their bill? It's their own business. Where I'm from, I doubt that most people would pay them any attention. Unless of course, they have a big, loud, fake argument over the bill, to try to get attention from the surrounding people. But if that is what they did here, is it really creative television to stage a big public argument and then film surrounding people watching it? I mean, they could just have someone run into a restaurant, spin around really fast while screaming as loud as they can, and film the surrounding people's reactions. But is that great television?
