*Classic antiquity is a big hobby of mine, and I personally feel the stories and legends of the past remain some of the biggest guidelines for me. Some are universal truths, some inspiring struggles against the odds, some just legends where the witty underdog triumphs over seemingly insurmountable odds.

In an effort to inspire my fellow MGTOWs to get yourself involved in this (usually very redpilled) treasure of stories, here is a personal favorite of mine.*

It is 509 BCE, the young Roman Republic is struggling to survive, and still a far cry from the dominating empire it is destined to become. Rome is besieged by the Etruscan King Lars Porsena.

The situation is dire for the Romans, and thus legend has it they take a desperate gamble to lift the siege and safe the city. A young roman, Gaius Mucius Scaevola, attempts to bring the siege to an end: he sneaks himself into the etruscan camp at night in order to assassinate the etruscan king. Yet by accident he kills a scribe, not his intended target, and is brought in front of King Porsena.

In order to save his life or at least postpone his death, Scaevola tells the king that 300 young romans are hungry for glory as well as the kings life, and that these assassins are already in the camp. King Porsena then threatens Scaevola to burn him alive if he does not unmask his fellow assassins.

Scaevola just puts his right hand into a burning brazier, holding it there while showing no discomfort, until the hand was consumed by the flames. Legend says he uttered the following statement.

"Look how worthless the body is to men who have their eyes on glory."

Deeply impressed by the courage and determination of this young roman, and in fear of further assassins, he set Scaevola free, broke of the siege and returned home.

Scaevola then returned to a heros welcome, was given a piece of land by his fellow romans, and was thus given the honorific name Scaevola, "the lefthanded" for obvious reasons.

(Note, this is a legend. While based on truth, this is probably not a historic fact.)
