While there are certainly airheads out there just following trends, I think social pressure also plays a part in why women were late to the party with videogames. When I was in high school, me and a friend would hang out a few days a week and play vidya. It was our little secret. She was very popular and had an image to protect. One day we were at her house and a friend of hers dropped by unexpectedly, so we hid the game system under her bed. She was a legit game geek but felt she had to keep that part of herself in the closet.

Just look at any Ubisoft game since 2017. All of them have tons of females included and minorities even in settings where neither existed and sell it off as a relatively accurate representation of the genre.
