My path was all over the place, jack-of-all-trades type thing...

Some things included:

Building Maintenance - which branches off into light electrical, plumbing, carpentry, drywall, painting, yard work, roofing, HVAC equipment, janitorial (don't be too proud to get dirty. Be a man like Mike Rowe. Conquer your fears.)
Heavy equip operation: dump trucks/bulldozers
Audio/visual installations - some light electronic repair
Sales: learning how to talk to strangers and communicate persuasively
Bookkeeping: learning how to manage money and administer financial reports
Computer stuff: graphics software, making websites
Office administration: data entry (very safe, not going to lose any fingers haha)
Educating: teaching others how to do things, in a patient but effective way

More stuff too that I'd rather not mention here (nothing crazy but it might identify me).

So one strategy is to keep working, and learn as much as you can, everywhere you can. It's totally OK to switch fields if you need to or are interested in a change. I know people that got laid off and literally sat around for 6-18 months thinking they had to stay in the same industry they were trained for. Well, in the meantime, they get depressed, marriages break up, and time is forever lost.

The easiest way for most average people to make money? Go to work. That's what most people do, and that's exactly what sustains most households.

I became a workaholic. Apparently many would consider that boring. However, it's really tough to get into trouble and do stupid things with your time if you're working. Plus, every hour earning is an hour you're not out spending.

If you learn to love working, you'll be doing yourself a huge favor. Because you're going to spend a lot of your life doing it. Don't be a goof and be bitching at 8:01 AM on Monday about having a job. Be enthusiastic that you can support yourself as MAN by providing real value to others.

Every dollar you earn is YOURS (after tax-LOL). Save, save, save.

Then.. once you accumulate money, you can start investing. I went with real estate. More average people became wealthy with real estate than in any other way, but it takes time, due to inherent stability. I'm not sure I'd recommend this now though in North America, as I doubt property will appreciate at the same pace I was able to enjoy.

The spreadsheet I made for myself made me get real with finances. It got very exciting to see debts go down and net worth go up. It takes time, but right before your eyes you'll see something clearly beneficial happening. You're actually building an empire!

It's surreal to compare your circumstances to men from past centuries and think.. wow, If I exchanged all of my cash & properties for actual gold and silver, it would be more than I could lift with both hands. Now you're like the Count of Monte Cristo.

Irrefutable wealth is a waaaaay better feeling than flaky women & the very temporary rush of sex. Because, your wealth and property is yours 24/7. You wake up and think, "wow I'm in very good shape here". It's orgasmic knowing you can go buy a Ferrari with cash, but yet you have the self-discipline not to. Because you prefer the flexibility of having the resources instead, and can already predict the buyer's remorse of dumping money into instantly depreciating assets.

With age and wisdom you care less and less about impressing others, and would rather just be left alone in peace than get caught in a keep up with the Jones game. You'll never win. There's always a higher level where you're now the small fish in that social circle. Appear average and play it cool. Aggressive gold diggers will not even look at you twice. They're chasing guys who they think have money.

Reflect on seeing trembling people buying lottery tickets as their last-resort plan to become rich. Don't do that.

Tip: If you ever happen to privately meet a bank teller, ask "What kinds of people actually have money? Describe them and what they're doing."
