I’m loving this video of an all-woman tribe in Kenya and how inspiring they’ve been in overcoming so many difficulties

Originally the tribe was a safe haven for women who were escaping the abuse of other patriarchal tribes in the area. Genital mutilation, rape, forced underaged marriages, and beating/killings are all common ways of life when living with men, no surprise. So these women came together and built their own houses, started selling jewelry, used the money to make a school which they educated not just theirs but other area children (boys and girls), and set up shifts to keep each other safe. Because of course, local tribes of men became jealous and furious at the thought of women living successfully without them, and attempt raids or try to ruin what they have. However the women can go out and have relationships with men outside of the tribe, but men who try to enter are beaten and dressed up like women. The tribe leader has met Hillary Clinton.

So these queens have escaped rampant abuse, fought off attacking men, built a whole society, educate and care for children, and make an independent living. I haven’t finished the video yet but I am so inspired and proud of what they’ve accomplished and think it’s such a good example of what women can achieve when you take away the negatives that men so often bring.

Edit: I just got to the part where they interviewed a man whose wife left him to go to the village. He’s pretty gross about how it’s not fair that his property is happy somewhere better haha stay mad. Meanwhile other villages have appeared modeled after similar ideas - one is called Nachami (meaning love) where the women run it and make the decisions, but men who have adopted new ideals live with them and say they don’t want to be superior, but to live, work, and love their wives equally.

I watched this all the way thru.

On the one hand, I'm struck at how fortunate we are to live the first world where women have absolute economic and legal autonomy, and a legal system that penalizes male on female violence.

On the other, I'm struck at how depressingly similar the Samburu men are like the LVMs here. They don't want to be with educated women that have their own money because then they can't control women. It's all. About. Control. In samburu, and in America.
