Do a lot of research. Many terps are idiots and think BDSM just means “you get to be rough and bossy”. It’s a lot more than that, if you want to actually do it in a healthy way.

Do you have experience, yourself? How familiar are you with aftercare? Have you ever negotiated consent before? How gracefully do you take “No” for an answer? Are you familiar with escalation?

Doms might look like they’re in control, but in a proper S&M dynamic, it tends to be the sub who makes all the final decisions. It’s vital to work out the means in which they’re comfortable communicating them during intimacy.

(I’m saying this as a dude who spends a lot of time in the kink community. Have dommed and subbed. As one girl expressed it to me once: “A good Dom makes you feel like you live in the palm of his hand. A shitty dom mostly just leaves you with a yeast infection and a bruised vulva.”)
