A while back there was a great post here about a guy who had graduated Med School with a very specialized degree and got a decent job offer for it. But instead, his GF -- who also was graduating with a Med degree, but not as specialized -- got a job in another city. The guy decides to follow her and gets a job that's NOT in his specialty. Years go by, and she's climbing the ladder very well. Meanwhile, he's not doing so well because his specialized training just wasn't so great outside the specialty. End result, her SMV eventually outranks his, she leaves him and he's stuck to think about well he could have been doing by now had he stayed with his specialty.
I have a distant younger cousin who's story somewhat resembles that. For years I've been saying I don't think his relationship with his college GF would last, and nobody believed me. Until something we all found out this past week.
He's a year older than her. When it was his time to graduate, he got a decent job offer near his home which meant he could have lived at his parents house for a while to save some money. But no, he wanted to stay near the college (near her) for that one year until she graduated. So he turned down the offer and took some shitty intern jobs to fill that year. When she graduated, she got a decent job offer. Unfortunately for him, the only job he could get now had a HUGE commute time, so he moved in with her in her apartment which cut the commute time down a bit. This would not be a problem if they're on track to get engaged, right?
Well guess what? She now wants him out of her apartment. He's going to have to move back home to his parents house anyway and have an even longer commute. Or cough up the dough and get his own apartment near his job.
Guys who sidetrack their careers for GF's, only to have it go sour. WTF?
