Hello! I've known about this subreddit for a while but haven't ever really explored it until now. I need some help, bros.
This might be a little long (THERE IS A TL;DR AT END). I skipped a grade as a child and finished high school with excellent marks and with a great result on the SAT at the age of 18. Had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I just knew I had to go to uni, and so I did.
AUG 2016: First semester was full of alcohol, drugs and procrastination. I didn't even want to be there. I just jumped into a high status degree (industrial engineering & management, which is very status-oriented here) but knew I didn't want to be there. Was just waiting for a good chance to tell my parents I've had enough and that I was going to drop out to work for a year or two. That day never came.
DEC 2016 - JAN 2018: I was too much of a pussy to actually take a break from school, so instead I tortured myself by continuing to pursue the degree. I started using nicotine - heavily - and I gained a lot of weight. On-top of that, I was having suicidal thoughts, like seriously. I'd have some brief, good times but then the depression would hit me with the certainty of truth, and I'd just want to die.
JAN 2018 - APRIL 2018: Something clicked. A spark of life returned unto me. Got a part-time job as a sub teacher and worked that a little while, before I got another part-time job which I could combine with my studies. I was studying hard and working.
Sometime in March I wrote two long summaries of two separate courses I was taking at the time, and I shared them with the entire class (consisting of about ~200 people or so). The most unbelievable thing happened as a result. People were thanking me left and right, I was receiving Facebook messages from girls asking questions about my summaries and just generally thanking me. At uni they'd actually look at me, smile and greet me. This had never happened before. Incredible.
APRIL 2018 - JUNE 2018: I was approaching the end of my 2nd year and I still had about 4 tough courses lagging behind me. I also didn't like my degree - I hated the finance I had to study with it. The programming work was a lot more fun, so I decided to switch to computer science & engineering in august 2018.
JUNE - AUG 2018: Worked a little bit, but wasn't satisfied with the job and there were too many women there and one actually tried to pull me into their fucking bitch drama. Fuck that I said. After a while I felt I wasn't getting anything out of the job so I essentially just quit.
AUG 2018: Come August, I was supposed to switch to computer science. Instead, I was full of fear and I couldn't make a decision, so I stuck around on industrial engineering, my initial degree. Half-way through the semester I'd had enough of the finance courses, for real this time. So in about October 2018 I said fuck it and made the commitment and switched to computer science. The only problem was now I was behind in the course work, which sucked balls because half the reason I wanted to make the switch was to get somewhat of a fresh start without lagging behind by 4 courses.
OCT 2018 - DEC 2018: The switch didn't change jack shit. Instead it turned out I knew nobody in the new class (except like one dude) and that made me really fucking depressed. At least on my old degree I had a solid set of people I could hang out with while in school and do school work with and shit.
NOW: Have no friends at uni now, only worked on 2 courses out of like 5-6 I was supposed to be doing this semester and I have an exam in a week which I haven't studied jack shit for. Shit's going down-hill again. I don't know what the fuck I want, either. I actually enjoy programming but my degree I think is way too abstract and maybe I just don't belong doing computer science & engineering. And then again I'm doubtful I actually want to do programming work for the rest of my life, you know what kinda nerd colleagues ya risk having? What the fuck should I do? I've been thinking of dropping out, getting a full-time job and applying for medical school (to become a doctor) in August 2019 or January 2020. My brother's doing the medical school thing and it's going great for him. I think I just need a serious break from school, this shit is absolutely killing me mentally and physically.
TL;DR: started studying at age 18 in august 2016, hated it, forced myself through it because didn't want to disappoint parents etc. had a period of lots of alcohol/drugs, then had suicidal thoughts, abused nicotine and gained lots of weight. switched to computer science in august 2018, realized the grass ain't all that greener on the other side and now i'm sitting here questioning my degree. contemplating dropping out, getting a full-time job for a while and then perhaps applying for medical school in august 2019 or jan 2020. what do i do?
