No shit... I was in medical school, and used to go out with a girl who joined nursing the year I joined.

We went out a couple fo times, did a few BF/GF things, and then she drops the bomb that she already had a BF of 3 years.

If you're looking for social connection go out and find it physically.

Social media (FB, Instagram, Tinder, reddit, etc.) are not tools that help you socialize. Social media is designed to isolate us and make us feel unworthy.

When we feel at our worst we are much more open to solutions. The solutions being pushed by social media are the products and services they advertise.

In your case, Tinder set you up on a shitty date, and now you feel like shit. This would be the prime time to try and sell you something. Tinder does not need to advertise to you, Tinder sells your information. You most likely shared contact info or arranged the meeting via Tinder. Then after it was over, you went back to Tinder and did a whole lot more swiping. Tinder puts these two pieces of information together, along with your Tinder habits (e.g. when you use the app, the type of person who grabs your attention), that is plenty of information to create a personalized ad.
