I've just entered this age group and I find it's typically better to create your own role as a consultant to these types of companies. No point in trying to fight it. Purposely hiring the less qualified candidate means the organization is going to fail or fall behind its plans. Inevitably the higher ups will figure out that they're behind and look to bring in outside consultants, at significant rates, to advise and bring them back into line with their plans.
