Italian legal system has always been one of the most balanced and egalitarian. Not for nothing it stems directly from Roman Law, the ancestor of all the modern legal systems.

There is this specific crime of "family abuse" (from 2 to 6 years of jail time depending on severity) that is applicable to whoever sistematically manipulates heavily or gives ill-treatment to another family member (it applies also to unmarried but cohabitant partners).
