This was made very clear in breaking bad. Gus was everything that Walt could have been, and Walt had it all "made" when he and Gus were working together.

Until he realized he wasn't "the man" of the empire, driving him to neuroticism, and creating a rift in an otherwise very tight business operation. When you watch again, Mike is just rolling his eyes at all of Walt's emotional bullshit lol
