The oft-repeated idea of, women achieve less and earn less only because they're biologically burdened during pregnancy/birth always bothered me. One reason is that it is actually very convincing to men like me who take what they say in good faith.

An interruption of one year from work force could be a huge liability from career. It can be argued, not only do they miss out on the year, they also miss out in terms of the interruption, and the mental recovery from the child birth.

What makes it even more convincing and convenient is that child birth is a biological thing that is only shouldered by women. So conceivably, it could be offered to explain how, women as a group could achieve same as men, if only they were not burdened by child birth. You men don't give birth, so don't you doubt my reasoning.

Then it occurred to me today. What about draft military service? Why are men not allowed to use that as excuse for anything?

In the US, men are drafted in time of war, but in countries like South Korea, all men are drafted even in peace time for military service. This would be perfect excuse from men IF MEN LOVED EXCUSES AS MUCH AS WOMEN.

  • The men has absolute no say on the matter. Drafted to compulsory service or prison.
  • There's nothing inherent about military service that makes it beneficial for career.
  • It's very possible that the military service, with all associated responsibility, and all the exposure to violence could leave lasting harm on men
  • It is sexist by definition. Only men are conscripted.

Yet you never hear any bitching about how conscription explains any possible short-comings by men. Not b/c the excuse would be any less credible. BUT B/C MEN ARE NOT ALLOWED TO GIVE EXCUSES, PERIOD.
