I've been well out of the Red Pill stuff for years now and luckily only believed it for a couple of months. I was initially drawn into the community because that year my best friend committed suicide and I felt I couldn't or wouldn't talk about it with people in real life so to the internet I went! I started with some men's rights stuff, which as we all know quickly shoves "fEmNaZi DeStrOyEd bY fAcTs & LoGiC", which is TRP bread and butter. I think this is one thing that doesn't get talked about much, there is a decent portion of men who get drawn into this stuff from grief. I can't tell you all the amount of anger I felt when I planned to listen to a speaker on a university campus but it was protested and cancelled by feminists. I cried that night because I wanted to try and understand why my best friend took his own life but the talk was cancelled because some people thought it was toxic. It was a perfect segway to the TRP logic that women have it better than men and control everything. They offered a support group for men and told me things like it's okay to be angry, validated my feelings, and I felt I was part of a community. These are all things friends and a therapist do for you as well, just I didn't seek it out in real life.
Thankfully, it only took a couple of months to realize that the subreddit was basically just dudes coming in hot after a breakup, sprinkled with dudes writing out fan fiction of their nights, and saying all women are whores, while simultaneously refusing to not date 6 other women. I also found a good male mentor and got interested in some women by doing some very non-TRP things.
