There is reward for us that maintain family ties even though it may be difficult. It's an obligation and remember that happiness is found at the feet of our mothers. I hope the brother reflects and realizes the kind nature in at least some of his parents actions.

Look, at the end of the day. The hadith of the Prophet pbuh says, "if you have no shame then do what you will." Your parents may not be perfect but that doesn't mean they don't wish well on you. If they are telling you to be a good Muslim and you below in Islam then take their advice. Don't be stubborn. If you don't really care about what Islam says then you will do what you want anyway. Islam doesn't force you to believe and obey. There is no compulsion in religion. However, believing is for your own benefit and your benefit alone.. If you want to do it, you benefit yourself and if you don't, then do whatever you will. Khalas.

For clarity brother. You have mentioned that if it’s not haram we must obey them at all times, there’s cases even if it’s not haram where you don’t have to obey, eg their choice of spouse.

Even if your parents are emotionally abusiven and difficult, harsh reality is that you still gotta obey and be good to them. If not for your conscience, at least for the sake of Allah and having an easier route to Jannah.
