I turned 36 last August and I finally said, "Screw it. I'm gonna go with my dream to spend part of the year in the U.S. and the other part out of the country." 2020 was the year I fully acknowledged the American Dream was never for me. The wife, the kids, the house, the soul crushing job, don't want it. Don't need it.
Where do I plan on going? Brazil and Honduras. I've always been interested in history, especially Latin American history. I actually know more about Latin American history than U.S. history. Some latinos have been shocked to meet an American who knows more about their country than they do. Back in 2018, I decided to learn Brazilian Portuguese and made friends and acquaintances online with Brazilians. I still communicate with them regularly. But I'm not sure if my Portuguese is up to par because the carioca dialect (the most popular Brazilian dialect) is so hard to understand. Still, my Portuguese improves every day and I can even understand Spanish a lot better. I have a friend about 20 minutes drive from me who is from Honduras and he's offered to show me around many times. So I can't wait.
I make average income and I have some money in the bank. I was previously making money working at ski resorts for winter than working at beach resorts or parks for the summer. So I don't do the steady job route. As a result, doing the snowbird thing won't be a problem.
I'm 100% tired of waiting around and thinking that a good time to go for my dreams will come eventually. The time is now. I'm going to for my dream in early 2021. Once I wrap up a few bills, April is a good time to go.
I encourage everyone to just say to hell with it and go for some unorthodox dream you have in 2021. Some people keep saying, "I'm just waiting for this whole covid thing to blow over. Then I'll go ahead with my plans." Just remember you could be saying this same thing in December 2021 or 2022 or 2023, etc.
