Now before you comment, please READ THE WHOLE STORY (if you don't, at least read the last paragraph):
Currently, I am 16 years old. I live with three brothers, two sisters, and both of my parents. My only older brother is in college, so I'm the oldest sibling in the house.
The way it started is this: Apparently my mom's iPhone was connected to my family's Mac computer, but nobody noticed but me (my parents had their own laptops, and my siblings didn't go on it much either). So every time someone texted my mom, it would pop up on the computer screen. I ignored the texts at first, until I saw a message that caught my attention. I don't remember exactly what the message said, but it had to do with sex. I clicked on it and found a convo between her and a guy named John.
I'm gonna spare the details, but basically they have been texting for a couple months (as far as I know). When my mom would say "I'm going to the gym", she really meant that she was gonna go have sex with John. The texts were very scattered and they would go weeks without texting. When I found this out, I didn't cry, but I was very scared of all the bad things that could happen.
My dad works all day to provide for my family. He is making a lot of money and owns a business. My mom has always been a house wife. Knowing that, I didn't want either of them to know that I found out my mom cheated on my dad. I wanted to hide it. But I thought about it for a couple hours...and that night, I decided to text my closest friend for advice.
He told me NOT to tell my father. He told me that I should have a talk with my mother about it, and tell her to stop seeing that guy.
After a week of putting it off, I finally got the balls to bring it up to my mother. It was midnight so nobody was awake but us. I told her about the texts that I read, and at first she sounded really defensive. She said "Oh that's just old stuff, don't worry about it". But I told her that I'm not stupid. I made her promise not to see John again. My mom told me that she plans on telling my dad later, maybe after a year or two so she can say that this was a long time ago, and HOPEFULLY my dad won't freak out.
One year later, my dad has a talk with me. He tells me something nobody knows but me, my mother, and his family:
As a kid, my dad got into a lot of trouble. His parents got divorced, and at 10 years old he lived with three older siblings taking care of him in a house without a mother or father. But he was surrounded by bad influences, and started doing drugs in 6th grade. Along with doing drugs,he started skipping school, and went to jail multiple times as a teenager and adult. "It's why I have so many tatoos on my body," he said. "But when you were born, I got my act together. Do you ever see me drink or do drugs anymore?" He was right. Now he's clean and sober. He turned his life around, started a business, bought a house, and made a big family.
But my dad had a relapse a couple of years back. He started doing drugs again and went to jail for 2 years. Right after he got out, he immediately got a job and got our family back together in a couple months (we lived with our grandparents/were in foster care while he was away).
We are renting a house now, my dad is making a lot of money again with his new business, and things are looking well, except for what's been sitting in the back of my mind:
I feel bad that my mom cheated on my dad. He went through a lot, put has always picked himself back up. His talk with me was to tell me that he doesn't want me to experience what he had to experience growing up, and he wants me to live a successful life. Now my dad is in his late 40s, and I think my parent's relationship is mostly for the kids, and not his happiness (although my dad is generally a pretty positive/happy guy).
Long story, I know, but I just wanna say that my dad isn't a pushover, or a pussy. Yeah, he made some mistakes, went to jail multiple times, but got out and always came back and had success. He's taking care of my family, he doesn't deserve to be cheated on. You guys got any advice?
