Fuck what pays. Honestly. You'll regret it. Do whatever you have a passion for. You'll manage to make a living out of it and much more, if you put in the work. If it's history, then pursue it. Specialize and become an expert. Somebody whom everybody will turn to and ask for advice, opinion and mentoring. Become the best fucking dude in your field that the world has ever seen. Be that guy that TV-stations call when they are in need for an interview partner.

Everything else is just looking for the short-term reward. Even if "short-term" means ten years, and if in comparison it will take you twenty years to become the top notch historian you are meant to be.

Don't choose the path that looks easy. Again: You'll regret it. Sooner or later. Always set ridiculous goals and pursue them ruthlessly.

Major in STEM, grab a minor in history. Since you are smart enough, just say "fuck it" and do a double major.

This way you have the best of both worlds.

I love history. I listen to podcasts, read books, etc. History won't pay the bills very well, though, so for me history is a hobby, not a profession.

Perhaps you are that .001% that can write really well and produce some sort of entertainment product or lecture series to support yourself using your knowledge of history. But what does your engineering mind tell you about those odds?

STEM, high-paying degree with high demand. Too many people study what they like for years and graduate only to find there is little benefit to all of the work. Feeling bored every now and then isn't as bad as wondering if you should go back to school.
