I've always been a competent employee in the office (small company in IT, programming/design), always ready to help people when needed and ready to face projects other people didn't want to do. I've always liked my job, and that allowed me to be ahead compared to my coworkers.
A year ago, I stopped being an altruistic coworker for free and started focusing more on my career, putting myself ahead of others. I didn't sacrifice team work but I stopped being the kind of person ready to do extra work just to help other people. In addition, I started making sure my successes and my value was well known inside the company given I was being seen as "one of the bunch" professionally in spite of my successes...
The result has been two fold: first, my image as the best and most competent employee was cemented, and my bosses stopped busting my balls and let me do as I pleased inside the company.
On the other hand, my coworkers started despising me for this. Even though I never put them in bad spots, even though I never antagonized them, the fact that I changed and stopped being a "pleaser", put me on a black list. The fact is, my coworkers started making me the "bad employee". It's clear cut that we are not the same, and that I'm tolerated only because of my professional value, but socially, I'm increasingly being left out.
Starting from a social standpoint, things started impacting my professional life: comments like "I'm difficult to work with" or "please keep mike out of these activities" or "damn, we need mike to do this..." started emerging.
Lucky for me, my bosses don't pay attention to this crap. But I cannot help but thinking that things may change sooner or later and all of this crap will come back to hunt me in the ass sooner or later. And all of this because the people I work with, on average, have difficulty with the job because they either don't like it or because they don't know how to do it and instead of facing this in a mature way and talking to our bosses about their problems or trying to learn, they keep their head down and keep these problems among them. And in this scenario, the "weirdo" who has no issues with the job, and doesn't need others to cope with it's "hardships", ends up being the scapegoat...
How do you cope with this without being a "sucker"? Why can't my professional value be enough to carry me inside the company? Why do I have to give my 150% in order to stop them from being passive aggressive all the time?
tl;dr: when I stopped giving a fuck and focused on myself, my professional progress made my coworkers hate me in petty and aggressive ways.... what can I do to survive this professionally?
