I care. I bought an ant farm but my ants didn't tunnel anywhere and died.

Ants. One of the most astounding advancements in science, was not something that you could really put a finger on, or I don't think has even found a very specific hard use yet was evolution.

Evolution, the idea that complexity of life could arise naturally was so groundbreaking, so shattering of mental blocks placed in our minds by the very evolution that allowed us to think. The implications are astounding. Inorganic matter over billions of years, eventually organizes itself into humans. Those humans have brains that are large enough, and organized in such a way as to allow thinking about abstract concepts such as past present future. To imagine things that do not exist. To communicate our ideas through language and then to preserve and build upon those ideas through writing, allowing us to build 747s, and to produce such medical wonders as antibiotics. To build the Hubble telescope.

Ants are key to all of this. They are a perfect example of how evolution works, and indeed intelligence itself. They teach us how incredibly wrong our psychology is, we all tend to look at ants and think, they all work together controlled by the queen ! isn’t that amazing!? But they don’t. We all have to learn that lesson. And the astounding and profound truth that they are not controlled by a mind. That indeed they aren’t a mind with a goal. They are very very simple organisms that react in specific ways to stimuli. That is all. That same mental leap is needed to understand evolution. To understand the accretion of hydrogen and the formation of stars. To understand the production of matter through the fusion in exploding stars, and the static electricity attraction of the resulting dust to form planets around another star and therefore solar systems.

To watch ants in action is to watch the creation of all life, all matter, and possibly the creation of the universe itself.

Cool. I had an ant farm when I was about 10. I used to love watching them do their thing. The ones I had we called 'Sugar Ants'. I used to love watching ant nests and could watch them work for quite a while.
