I recently saw The Last American Virgin and holy crap, what an ending. Quick run down (spoilers): three buddies are trying to get laid, one of whom is a virgin. The other two have no trouble, but the protagknist always comes up short. He falls for a cute virgin, but she fucks his friend. When she ends up pregnant, the friend dumps her. The protagonist consoles her, sells his stuff and borrows money to pay for her abortion, nurses her back to health, and they share a tender moment and a kiss. Pretty typical for a coming of age teen movie, right? Well they agree to meet at a party, so our hero scrapes together some money for a necklace and heads to the gathering. What does he find? His oneitis, making out with the friend who knocked her up and dumped her. They all lock eyes, the protagonist is heartbroken. He walks out, gets in his car, and drives away. Roll credits, AWALT, nice guys finish last, holy crap is that a realistic ending. It's worth watching just the ending, honestly. YouTube has it.

The Last American Virgin is from 1982, so it's dated, and admittedly no where near as good as Pretty in Pink, another example where the clueless weirdo doesn't get the girl in the end. That's the kind of theme I like. Realism. What would actually happen to Duckie? Exactly what did happen. His crush hooks up with whomever she wants (because she's a cute teenage redhead) and he would end up alone because he's a beta orbiter.

I saw Superbad for the first time a few months ago. Late bloomer on that one. Funny stuff. I went years missing plenty of McLovin references. But the losers get the girls in the end. Two of them! A fucking enormous neckbeard with a Jew fro and his skinny loser boyfriend end up with 8/10's. That just doesn't happen in this plane of existence.
