Hello Reddit, I have two basic questions about real estate & alimony in case of a divorce. I'm a Florida resident and may possibly get married in a few months, and do not have a prenup planned as of now. I'm weighing my options about the following:
1 - I have purchased a home, all under my name, and have all my bank accounts solely under my name as well. While I may have a combined account with my wife-to-be at some point, house payments will come from an account solely under my control. I'll be the breadwinner and she'd a stay-at-home mom, so all her income would pretty much come from me. In the event of a divorce, what kind of exposure am I looking at, when it comes to the house being disputed in court?
2 - Since she'd be a stay-at-home mom, and she has a son from a previous marriage (the father does not support him nor help in any way, BTW), how would that play into a fight over alimony, if it came to that? Her son is a pre-teen, so he wouldn't be independent for years to come.
I've read a little about this but I'm hoping to get further insight. At this point, I figured this sub might point out to me pitfalls or issues to watch out for in this kind of situation. Of course, I plan on contacting a family lawyer for consultation, and may even go for a prenup if needed, we'll see. Thanks, Reddit!
