This is a feminist false assumption with which I have a problem. I know MRA's often agree with it, but it takes away attention from the real problem. There is also the implied 'toxic masculinity' in this statement. Some feminists actually expressely connect men's 'failure to come forward' with toxic masculinity as 'men fell they must be perceived as strong'.

Imagine a world in which awareness of domestic violence against men is discussed. Services are available. The court system recognizes it. Website talk about domestic violence against men and point to resources for men. Women are rarely mentioned, if they are, it is usually as perpetrators. Even more rarely is recognition of domestic violence against women and virtually all the services only serve men. Now imagine a women is a victim of domestic violence. She goes on the internet looking for a way to get away. She discovers the above. Is she more likely to come forward? Of course not. In fact, the system in place not only encourages men to come forward, but portrays women as violent. This would inhibit her from coming forward, in part over concern of being falsely accused.

Of course this is not the world we live in. Instead it is the world we live in with the sexes reversed. This system created by feminists encourages women to come forward and discourages men from coming forward. This is my main disagreement with MRA's who agree with "it is less socially acceptable for men to admit to and report experiencing abuse". It takes attention away from the problem.

Years ago, domestic violence was ignored for everyone. Then feminists created a system which discriminates on the basis of gender in how it portrays domestic violence and how it is treated by the government funded services. In other words, feminists contributed to creating an environment where "it is less socially acceptable for men to admit to and report experiencing abuse". Feminists are dishonest and refuse to admit that their discrimination on the basis of gender created this problem. It was a problem that unfortunately equally ignored domestic violence against men and women in the past, but now today is a system today that feminists created that ignores domestic violence against men but not women; the discrimination created this problem. Remember, in the past (before the 50's) it would have bwomeneen shameful for women to come forward. In other words, "it was not acceptable for women to admit to and report experiencing abuse" and "it was not acceptable for men to admit to and report experiencing abuse".

If you as an MRA agree with the feminists statement "it is less socially acceptable for men to admit to and report experiencing abuse", then you are feeding into the feminists' false narrative that 'toxic masulinity' makes men feel they have to be strong so they do not come forward. It also allows feminists to escape blame for the system they created because it dishonestly puts the blame on the individual man for not coming forward, when it is instead the system that feminists created that changed an old system of ignoring domestic violence equally among everyone, to a present day vilify the men in connection with domestic violence.

If feminists think that men who fail to come forward is because of 'toxic masculinity', then women who do not come forward suffer from 'toxic femininity'. Toxic femininity is when women go too far in putting priority of others over herself, so she doesn't want to get the perpetrator in trouble. Toxic femininity is also where women fail to come forward because 'women are afraid'. This being afraid is toxic to women, and is therefore 'toxic femininity'. By framing women as not coming forward, it puts the blame on the women. By stating these women have 'toxic femininity', this means women are agents who choose to act in this way described as 'toxic femininity'. Therefore, women are responsible for not coming forward and women are to blame for not coming forward. Feminists would agree that it is not appropriate to blame women for not coming forward, which is why they raise awareness of domestic violence against women. In exactly the same fashion, 'toxic masculinity cause male domestic violence victims to come forward' assigns agency only to men and assigns responsibility and blame only to men for not coming forward.

Finally, feminists complain that society treats 'men as actors and that women are acted upon'. An actor is always responsible for his/her actions; an object is not. When feminists frame men who do not come forward when abused as 'toxic masculinity' but not women as 'toxic femininity' for the same situation, feminists are framing men as actors who are responsible for their actions, but not women.

Yeah, I thought this was surprising to see from the ABC, but they seem to have more breadth / freedom for issues like this than the major Fairfax papers. We discussed it at LWMA here.
