It depends on both people. I have some female friends were it would not be weird and some male friends were it would be weird.

So in conclusion, there is only a double standard if you make one.

You are talking about a close personal relationship so the rules are between you two. There are male friends I would hug without question or explicit consent and female friends I would hesitate before doing so ( and vice versa.)

A woman I am friends with used to have a thing about her knees being touched so I often grabbed her knees. It was playful affection nothing more. She's over it now so I dont do it any more - only fun pissing off your friend when it works!

I don’t think this is a gendered debate. This is a debate about boundaries. Boundaries are different depending on your relationship with the individual, and what you know that individual is comfortable with. Simple as that. Communication. Expressing boundaries and nothing more. This discussion about what your female friends may or may not be comfortable with likely comes down to undiscussed and undisclosed boundaries.

Sounds like he's just being playful here. If there's any double standard, I think it's understandable. If you don't mind it yourself, you should worry about it.
