The disturbing part of this is that the concept of stopping derogatory rhetoric against any group of people who didn't choose to be a part of that group would be controversial.

As an AA, you could start with something like "As a minority who has been unfairly negatively stereotyped based on my skin color, something which I have no control, I believe I have a unique perspective on this issue."
