Historically the hair of male slaves, male convicts, and soldiers has been particularly short to emasculate them and establish dominance. Long hair, on the other hand, has been a sign of freedom, wealth, and sexuality Hmm ... just thinking about the modern man.

Point taken about society in context though :). I read something recently about beards becoming popular and fashionable when males are considered less masculine as a whole.

Long hair, fingernails, jewlery, a tan (or lack of one, depending on if your culture is industrialized or agricultural), make up and heels are status symbols because they signal that the wearer doesn't need to preform manual labor. It's because if you have to work or fight in dirty and crowded conditions, you need short hair for sanitary and safety reasons. A tan signals that you can afford to go on vacations in western societies, a lack of a tan signals that you don't have to work in the sun in non western societies. All of those things have always been status symbols. And short hair is used in the military for an additional reason: when we send men and boys to die in wars, we are always first dehumanizing them by taking their individuality away. That's why you get a uniform, haircut, a number and when you are use up as cannon fodder, we say we "lost" you, or you "fell" to remove ourselves from emotionally. Talk about "objectivication".

When I see the logical gymnastics people use to talk about those things as oppressive towards women I'm always just baffled.
