I have been lurking here and TRP for quite some time now. The resources, personalities, and advice on this sub and TRP have provided such tremendous guidance for me to be the woman I have always envisioned myself to be. (I actually have "RPW 101: Cultivating a Feminine Frame of Mind" printed out and up on my cork board above my desk! Thanks, /u/Camille11325!).
I (26) am engaged to an incredible man (28). I still can't believe how closely he follows the core of TRP's values and guidelines, and I absolutely love that about him (hence why I have chosen to spend my life with him!). Unfortunately, however, we are in a long distance relationship for the next year due to our school's geographic locations (he is in medical school on the east coast and I am in PA [Physician Assistant] school on the west coast).
I am struggling to be a RPW for him from a distance. He is not the best communicator (with words). When we lived together, it was easy to see when he needed me and I knew exactly what I needed to do in each moment to provide for his physical and emotional well-being. However, with this distance, I am really struggling with not being physically with him.
We've talked about this (probably too often)--I've mentioned how I yearn for him to open up, talk to me, express how he feels, tell me what I can do for him. I've sent him numerous things (and now just send him a card each saturday for him to receive wednesday for fear that I may "smother" him). I am also struggling with the fact that because he is not the best at vocalizing his feelings or support, I am feeling vulnerable, lonely, and unsupported.
I love that we're both in medicine, we both have the same hobbies and continue them separately (we both participate in Olympic weight lifting/training and love talking stats with each other nightly); our conversations could go on forever about these things. But, I feel like they are superficial sometimes...as in, we don't necessarily talk about how we really feel like we used to ("today was stressful because___", etc)
Have any of you been in a temporary long distance with your SO? What did you do or change so that you could remain his support and provide for his needs?
