I have never read the book so I honestly don’t really know the differences between the book and the movie. But this movie, I feel, does an amazing job portraying male depression. I don’t want to spoil too much, but this movie focuses on a young freshman dealing with tons of trauma along with his natural introversion. The movie shows how completely alone he feels, and it’s only by finding other similarly damaged individuals, that he’s able to truly find peace.
Kay a bit of spoilers, the movie does focus on a young male being molested by an adult women. And this movie does not take that lightly. AT ALL!!! This movie has a very mature understanding of the impact of abuse, but it also shows a way to overcome that deep pain that stays. Having dealt with my own personal demons and abuse, it is hard not to see myself in this movie
The book was super controversial, and the movie isn’t too different. But I honestly recommend this movie. It is told through the male perspective, and it feels almost life like. Like it geniuinely hurts watching this movie
