Relax. A single-parent household is a risk factor in child and teen suicide, but it's not the only one. "Factors that play a more crucial role in suicide risk include depression or other changes in mood, acting out, and substance abuse -- which is the major risk factor," says Madelyn Gould PhD, MPH, professor of child psychiatry and public health at Columbia University. "Be vigilant to how your kids are behaving."

Good parenting helps, apparently.

That doesn't do you a lot of good if you are a father that isn't allowed to be a parent, or a child without a father though.

Any good parenting situation would assume a non-psychotic bitch as the mother - as in, the kinda parent that doesn't keep a parent away from her kids.

My dad was fantastic. Highly recommend.

My son's, on the other hand, eventually decided three days into his equal parenting time that he didn't wanna anymore, and that I had 12 hours to come get our kid (9 hour drive away, that I had just made entirely at my own expense to drop off, while working three jobs because I was transitioning from one of them into another) or he was going to abandon him somewhere for social services to pick up. And that wasn't even the worst thing he ever did, just the most disappointing.

Parental alienation is absolutely awful, I also have a brother that none of us have seen in years, because his mother is a psychotic twat.

But not every kid that doesn't see one of their parents is being subjected to alienation.

Yeah 10/10 Dad's are great would have and love one again.

Hopefully you discussed this with him well before you chose to become pregnant and he was totally onboard at the time and expressed enthusiastic ongoing consent?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Neither one of us chose the beginning of the pregnancy, no birth control method is 100%. But we both chose what happened with it afterwards.

I haven't asked for a dime from him for any kind of support and never will - and I went to great personal expense to allow the man that physically abused me (but not the kid) to have as much of a chance as possible to co-raise our child, for the sake of our child, because I do know fathers are important. It's a long, dark, and somewhat morbidly amusing (now, ten years later) saga that I don't feel like getting much more into at the moment.

Not all men can or should be fathers, and certainly not all women can or should be mothers. I'm just glad my kiddo doesn't see all these articles telling him how much he's going to suck as a human being simply because only one of us actually stepped up to be a parent.

No one is saying every child of a single mom will "suck".

Not every unvaccinated kid will get sick and die.

But it's still a good policy to recommended vaccinations for kids.

Not every kid of a single mom will kill themselves.

But it's still a good policy to avoid this situation when possible.

But it's still a good policy to avoid this situation when possible.

That I can certainly agree with, and I'd never advocate for anyone to become a single parent without a damn good reason. Purposely bringing a child into this world, knowing for sure beforehand that you'll be doing it alone, is irresponsible at best.

Purposely cutting an even marginally competent parent (assuming the child is still safe, I know plenty of weekend parents that are really only ever responsible humans when they have their kids) out just for spite is despicable and damages everyone involved.

I pointed out the original quote, though, because the parenting itself really does make a difference, for all types of single-parent kids. If one is purposely and obviously badmouthing the ex and estranging their child from their other parent, that's going to be a big factor, and is certainly likely to cause depression, or at the very least add to what's already there. Proper co-parenting, or when that's not possible (like for my situation) at least not making the absent parent out to be the 'bad guy', will improve their overall mental health chances dramatically.

No question that type of thing happens, sorry for that. I, nor this sub in general, are anti woman or anti children.

That said, most of the time when a parent loses custody it is the man - and generally it is at the request of the woman.

Oh, I know. And it's wrong, and it shouldn't happen, and I wholeheartedly advocate for it to stop. I know many great single fathers, plenty of average ones, and even a few that are complete walking shitshows in every other aspect of life except for fatherhood. I support a father's right to father, just as much as a mother's (maybe more, my dad went through a lot to raise me, after my mom left us), if they're both even somewhat competent.

There were just a whole slew of articles like this yesterday, and they finally started to needle at me a bit. Like I said in another reply, I'm glad my kiddo hasn't read all these fun things about how he's apparently screwed as a human simply because of his father's choices. He's a bright, happy, amazing child, and the lengths that some of these studies go to, to make it sound like any child of a single mother is just a ticking time bomb, is pretty depressing in and of itself.

[–]TiredRick 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I can understand that it would be frustrating - now you know what an average guy (who has been screwed over by the system at least) feels with exposure to the average media coverage. Generally there is the assumption that all guys are bad parents, and all women are superheroes. When of course that is false, and so is the polar opposite. Everything is a case by case unique situation, and nothing ever fits into a cookie cutter pattern.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, I get that. I don't see as much about so-called 'deadbeat dads' in the news as I did even just a decade ago, but it's possible I'm just not looking at the same media that I was back then. And those are just as frustrating to read, I do know good men who've been horribly disenfranchised.

When my ex-stepmom skipped the state with my baby half-brother, my dad couldn't even make it to court in the state that she filed in, much less afford a lawyer, and the internet wasn't anywhere near the resource that it is now, so he didn't know if there were any other options.

We lived in poverty most of my childhood, and she's a decent chunk of the reason for it - she didn't need the money, she was just bitter. Actually, I think she's the only woman I've ever known personally that pretty much fits this sub's view of feminists to a T, and I despise her for what she did to the whole family.

Everything is a case by case unique situation, and nothing ever fits into a cookie cutter pattern.

This is absolutely true.

Relax, drinking during pregnancy isn't the only cause of birth defects. So let's create policies to encourage women to get hammered during pregnancy.

[–]RIPOldAccountF 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Some kids are depressed their father never had an opportunity to be in the kids life. Also a good father would discipline them so they are less likely to act out or be a substance abuser.

a good father

That's they key part. Even a mediocre or not-actively-terrible one, actually.
