I agree 100% re legalising prostitution/sex work. Small correction though: the preferred model is not actually "legalisation" but rather "decriminalisation".

"Legalization" of sex work means that it becomes legal to have sex for money, but the industry is regulated by specially-written laws. For example, some jurisdictions require sex workers to be licensed, and naturally, licenses may be withheld for a variety of reasons.

"Decriminalisation" of sex work means that all sex work-specific laws are abolished and it's simply treated as a profession like any other. For example, brothels still have to comply with the same health & safety laws as any other business. Sex workers still have to pay tax like any employee. There's no legal difference between sex workers and, say, hairdressers or accountants.

Sex workers overwhelmingly prefer decriminalisation over the other approaches, for a number of reasons including the fact that it helps to diminish the stigma and judgement that they face from the rest of the community.

Under decriminalisation, a sex worker's choice of career cannot be used against her in a child custody dispute, or as an excuse for refusing to rent her a home, just to name two examples.

The state of NSW, Australia, has had decriminalisation now for 23 years. New Zealand has had decriminalization for 16 years. Some unique attributes shared by the two include:

No sex trafficking found anywhere within the industry, as reported by police. As in literally zero reported cases. There is some human trafficking in the farming and restaurant industries, but none found in the sex industry.
Sex workers can (and do) go to the police when they experience violence or theft, and the police treat them exactly the same as other members of the community.
On a related note, one of the main reasons that NSW went for decriminalisation was to eliminate the chronic police corruption that resulted from their role in regulating the industry. Police extortion and brutality against sex workers were both common prior to 1996. In March 2016, a government inquiry explicitly ruled out any return to police involvement in the industry for the same reasons.
Sex worker advocacy groups have voluntary access to almost 100% of brothels, in order to meet with workers and educate them on topics including sexual health, STI prevention and their legal rights including wages and entitlements.
World's-best rates of condom use (well above 99%) in the sex work industry and the world's lowest rates of STI among sex workers. In fact, NSW sex workers have lower rates of STIs than the female population as a whole. You're less likely to catch something from a sex worker than you are from your next one night stand or your next serious girlfriend.
Pimps are virtually unheard-of in the industry. When sex work is decriminalised, sex workers simply have no need for pimps.
Sex workers can operate from their residence, alone or in pairs, without having to be worried about prosecution for pimping or brothel-keeping. Allowing sex workers to freely operate from their home and with 2 sex workers on the premises, makes a huge difference to their safety.

When given the choice, sex workers overwhelming prefer decriminalisation over the other options. Australia is a great demonstration of this fact because NSW is the only state to have full decriminalisation and many sex workers regularly tour between states for work. They experience the full range of legal options during a national tour and almost unanimously report NSW's decriminalised sex industry as the working environment they prefer.

All of this is good for men too. It means men have access to sex workers who are disease-free, working as sex workers because they chose to and who are safe & happy on the job.

No one could reasonably object to that and want to keep sex workers miserable in an illegal industry instead. Well, of course many feminists do. But that's just because they hate men more than they care about women's freedom & safety, at least when it comes to the "wrong" women.

The bottom line is that the evidence strongly supports decriminalisation of sex work and that's why every evidence-based organisation that works in this area endorses decrminalisation, including these:
