From what I have seen, I think they blame gender roles because it allows them to not have to consider any of the actual factors that increase men's suicide rates:

legal problems & prison – divorce (custody battles, false DV claims, etc), CPS arrears, false rape allegations, an increasing number of male-only criminal offenses and anti-male laws (only men can rape, etc), sentencing gap, etc
financial problems – child support, alimony, etc
sexual abuse – female teachers raping students, female babysitters raping children, etc
employment problems – discrimination against men in hiring practices, anti-male HR departments, etc
education difficulties – female-only university scholarships, female-focused learning environments, teacher gender imbalance (over 90% female at many levels), overuse of antipsychotics on boys (ritalin, etc), boys getting lower grades for equivalent work as girls, higher male dropout rate, etc
family issues – estrangement from children (father), lack of father (son), etc
health system issues – lower funding for male-focused health initiatives and services, etc

The presence of any of the above issues in a boy or man's life will put him at much greater risk of suicide (some will increase the chances by over 1000%). Yet if you look closely at each of the examples I give of how these things can occur, they are all either deliberately ignored – even suppressed – or in many cases promoted strongly by those who always say it's men's fault that they take their own lives. So it's essentially in the interest of those who want to improve the lives of women to never see that – for example – taking away opportunities for fulfilling careers and jobs from men will result in an increase in deaths from suicide among males. And so they just blithely say "men need to go see a doctor when they are sick", even though studies show that 90% of men who commit suicide have at least one interaction with the health system in the past year before they took their own life.

So the facts show that suicidal men don't try to "tough it out", but instead the real problem is that they don't receive the help and resources needed to improve their health when they do request it. The hidden truth is that any support given to prevention or treatment of suicide for men would mean less focus on women in all of the areas I listed out above. I don't know if you will be less annoyed at clearly seeing the source of this attitude, but perhaps understanding the greed and selfishness behind it will help somewhat in accepting this for what it is: female supremacy.

I believe a large proportion of men are checking out because the effort in many cases far exceeds the reward.

Eg. a man after separating with not much money after everything leaving a poor existence of what he once had. Pretty hard to get Out of that situation when you can’t save. So all there is to offer is forever in the poor house.

No its not, it also wouldn't account for the variability despite 'gender roles' being similar to nigh identical across every culture that has ever existed with only a handful of exceptions.

I think it all boils down to acceptance and empathy, as a man, you have less of both from everyone, increasing stress and pressure and eventually you pop.
