One of the issues I have with framing men's space for emotional expression so as to avoid the toxicity that comes with emotional repression, as a feminist issue, is that when it comes to emotional expression for men, lot of women feel that they should be, or it is their right to be the gatekeepers of men's emotional expression.

They feel that they should be able to dictate what is and what isn't valid and/or useful, and that it should be the feelings of the woman that is centred when considering how the mans emotional expression is received. This is beautifully illustrated by the panel members in the video attached.

I have experienced this myself; the encouragement of men to be expressive (I am naturally expressive myself) and the subsequent attempts to either stage manage said expression, or collating it and using it as capital in an argument at a later point. Either way, you know that being emotionally expressive as a man comes with a price when done with some women.

I wish I were just shouting into the wind with this, and I probably would be if "emotional labour" were not a new buzzword people in certain third wave feminist circles were using to describe the very same phenomenon.

I don't really like my ex tbh she makes my life a nightmare every chance she gets, but weve been in each others lives since we were kids and we have a child together. If she died it would still hurt.

I don't know who is more pathetic in this scenario, the women or the men.
