TL;DR Men in positions of authority benefit most from the Disposable Male strategy

I'm sure some of you know of the "disposable male" concept, I'll call it DM. It's supposedly a tribal reproductive model, in which the females (the reproductive bottleneck) are preserved by requiring males to do dangerous work, thereby maximizing a tribe's reproduction by limiting the loss of the more valuable sex.

I've though about this a lot, and while it's clearly a prevalent issue in my country (US), I don't think the traditional model of the DM is complete. I don't think that tribes collectively come up with reproductive models, and I say this because I've noticed that humans tend to be influenced by self-interested leaders, such as politicians. In fact people will believe outrageously incorrect things and make illogical, self-harming actions because of a leader's influence.

Here's what I think: the DM is actually a male reproductive strategy. Men at the top of a tribe can dictate whether they personally engage in dangerous activities like hunting or warfare; by sending off males to do these activities, they maximize their time with females and eliminate reproductive competition in the process. While this arrangement is beneficial to females on its face, it also reduces their choice of mate, which is a reproductive disadvantage. But for males in positions of authority, it's purely advantageous.
