The full effect of what was kick started by a single lie which was never questioned snowballed into a massive shitstorm, after which it was too late for anyone to backpedal and apologise... Especially since people had already faced consequences because of these mere allegations (one choosing to end his life).

This is exactly the problem with the switch to "guilty until proven innocent", especially when the burden of proof is high impossible for the accused
