I am not sure that he is criticised but the lack of proportion shown in the comments is incredible. The consensus seems to be that he behaved badly in using the phrase 'holy shit' when suddenly caught in a mass shooting with his family and in fear for his and their lives.

To me it is amazingly mild considering the situation and anyone whose main reaction is to focus on that has a rather warped sense of priorities and a distinct lack of empathy. Nothing to do with mens rights however.
