In my country we just had a pregnant woman become minister of something or other. She's going to be out between 1-2 years on leave. She should absolutely not have been selected. An employer wouldn't hire someone for a job knowing they'd be away for x amount of years.

So much for the Labour party caring about women, I personally don't think that MPs should be deselected over this, that's pretty harsh. My only point of contention is that male MPs should be able to get maternity leave as well but you can bet the BBC won't bring that up and this is coming from somebody who absolutely despises parliament.

The problem is though, MPs are so fucking corrupt you can bet that they're going to abuse the system constantly.

Will those women provide the work, and good enough work, for which they were selected? Because maternity leave says they will not.

Maternity leave is deterimental to the employer while providing nothing in return. Especially, it does not provide monetary profit for said employer, which is what its all about.

What you have to ask is how long will it take to train and replace that specific employee? Are they somebody with a lot of experience or are they easily replaceable? That would be the deciding factor for me, if I could hire a temp or get somebody to cover for them while they have the child I would rather do that and keep the original employee after they've gone on maternity leave than have to spend all those resources and time training up someone new only to have it all happen again.

That being said, let's be real here, MPs are pretty disposable these days and very few of them are genuine representatives I wouldn't exactly lose sleep if she got ditched especially if it meant Labour lost a seat lol.

Not just time. Also, the cost. Employing jer must be a net gain. If its not, she is a weakest cog, to be promptly removed from the company.

Her kid is her private matter, and not exactly my business. Why should my business have to suffer setbacks of any kind, because of her private life? Its not her vagina that runs the world. Its profit.

Normally I'd be more on the side of pro-maternity leave but I have to admit when it comes to people like MPs I have a hard time justifying it lol you can bet as well that the people trying to cause a fuss over this sort of thing will turn around and say men shouldn't have maternity leave.
