Unprovoked 'one punch' attacks are now subject to harsh penalties in Australia unless the perpetrator is a woman in which case she gets off with a small fine as usual.

They don't put any focus on care we should be offering men that would reduce suicide. Making it about Mental Health is naive and ineffective.

Support services for men are very limited in scope. I run such a service and when I go looking there are very few out there with that specific purpose.

It was very telling a while ago when one of my female social work students asked me what she should do to manage the situation if she thinks a client is flirting with her.

I told her to ask her mates that were also out on internships. She got back to me after their next meeting. She said, none of them are working with men.

The are about 20 of them. And I'm sure she meant they only deal with the occasional man. But that gives you some measure of the amount of care women are offered that men aren't. So many special doorways for them.

Very good points. Please tell me about the service you provide.

Three main services seeing about 200 men per week.

Counseling with brief social work interventions. Peer support for male survivors of sexual abuse. And one on one support for dads, mostly dads going thru a separation, or dealing with child intervention services.

We have a couple of other projects as well.

All men should have access to these services. In most first world countries women do.

No. Across the ditch. So close at least.

Damn, so close, yet so far.

As an Australian man who has considered suicide more than once, its good that someone is finally talking about this shit. I wish it was much more mainstream.

Although it does misrepresent some things. Suicide is the 13th leading cause of death in Australia overall(and would be tenth for men, not even top 20 for women). But the categories are separated by specific cases rather than cancers, diseases, etc. It should be shocking that suicide is basically third in deaths after cancers and disease(and about 6 times the rate of homicide), but its almost never talked about.

I'm with a mental health service, have been for a few years now, and predictably, there are almost no men attending this, a worker i had a while back was a young guy and he even mentioned that they were thrilled to have another guy around as theres such a lack of them in the field. He knows these stats and is concerned about them.

One of the big problems i find is the willingness to put myself out there, which is why the fact this service comes to me is such a huge deal. Guys typically don't seek out help. While there are a number of services that don;t care about your gender, most things you find are women focused, and those are the ones that actually advertise.

It being on the rise would be a surprise to no man. I would put money on it increasing further once we get 2018 and 2019's numbers.

Not the above article fortunately, but many articles I read state something like "men are afraid to come forward" and have other negative connotations about men.

If you live in a society that says men are privileged and should shut up, don't expect them to not shut up. This part of the problem is still ignored in every article that I have read.
